A Unique Current Affairs Show

Leon Charney is a prominent lawyer, author and former adviser to President Jimmy Carter, who described Mr. Charney as the "unsung hero" of the Camp David Accords.

The format is unrehearsed, highly intelligent one-on-one discussion. The result is a unique hour of "organic" television.

His guest list has included, among others: Mario Cuomo, Ehud Barak, Ithak Rabin, Ezer Weizman, Jimmy Carter, Shimon Peres, Rudy Giuliani, Charles Rangel, Jackie Mason, Pat Cooper, Vernon Walters, Elie Wiesel, Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Al D’Amato, Butros Gali and Orrin Hatch.

Conversations On The Conflict

Framed in Leon Charney’s Times Square office is a quote from John F. Kennedy: “When written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters — one represents danger and the other represents opportunity.” The Jewish Week meets with the author, television talk show host, lawyer, real estate executive and “back door” Middle East diplomat on the Monday after a weekend of horrific terrorism in Israel. A self-described “cautionary optimist,” he says that “the U.S. got 100 percent confirmation that Arafat is not a viable partner for peace at this point.” Conversation is interrupted several times, when he gets calls from CNN’s Wolf Blitzer about being interviewed that evening, and when his producer and a newsman from ABC check in with him about breaking news.
